There are traces of tannins found in fruits, tea, corn etc. The effect of Tannic acid on human health has been a debatable subject in health circles for a long time. Tannic acid is a type of tannin that is available with less acidity and could be dissolved in water unlike the others. Certain trees and plants produce them naturally to act against pests and fungus that grow to spoil the fruits and vegetables. It has good antifungal, antibacterial and antioxidant properties that could help humans in immunity development. A research done by Cornell University Department of Animal Science shows, tannins are a group of compounds that have the protein binding capacity to convert them into compounds. Tannic acid could be useful for herpes.

Consumption of Tannic acids has its own advantage and disadvantage. They are present in abundant amount in many fruits, nuts, herbs, and plants. They are also used as an ingredient in chocolate and wine making to give that astringent taste and also as preservative. The caustic taste you get when you eat an unripe fruit is because of the Tannin. A ripe fruit has more fructose than Tannic acid. Fruits like limes, lemons, grapes, guava, oranges, pineapples, blackberries, apricots, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, etc have high tannic acid content. Most of these fruits have a large storage of this in the skin and peeling or removing the skin removes the tannins too.

Though this is a natural antibacterial and antiviral agent and not harmful by itself, it is always better to be cautious of the source of tannic acid. It could be used frequently as an additive in the foods and beverages. The tannins in the fruits protect them from getting spoilt due to the growth of microbes and hence, this also when in-taken, helps in inhibiting growth of food borne bacteria, fungi and yeast.

The cold sore that is commonly found in many people is caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus Type I. The red blister around the mouth makes it painful and is odd to look at. If the infection is not treated properly and the virus removed from the system, there is 100% possibility of reoccurrence. Applying used tea bags in these areas also help in healing the cold sore, as the tannic acid has natural fighting properties.
